The Honorable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE, FAEng has stated that it is a known fact that regular washing of hands with soap and water and maintaining simple hygiene practices can protect people from contracting dangerous diseases including the infectious disease called Covid-19 commonly known as Corona virus.

The Minister made this disclosure today, 4th March, 2020 in his office in Abuja following the need for all to ensure good sanitation and hygiene so as to curb the global spread of the noval Covid- 19 in our country.

Adamu said that “the Ministry under my watch…has been striving very hard…and working towards touching the lives and well – being of the good people of Nigeria in many positive ways particularly in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sector in consonance with the parlance that “Water is Life”.

It will be recalled the Corona virus was first discovered in the Industrial City of Wuhan in China that has the population of 11 million people at the end of 2019.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), signs of infection include cough, fever, breathing difficulties and shortness of breath. In severe cases, Corona virus can lead to pneumonia, organ failure and death while some other infected patients may be asymptomatic, not displaying symptoms despite having the virus.

The virus is now a global problem, affecting most countries in the world and about 94,250 cases as at 4th of March 2020. It was first discovered in Nigeria on Friday, 28th February, 2020 when an Italian Contractor working in Nigeria flew in from Milan aboard Turkish airlines. He has been quarantined and is responding to treatment according to the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire. 

Engr. Adamu strongly advised that the simple act of washing hands with soap and water regularly and especially at critical times which includes, before and after defecation, urination, after changing baby’s diapers, before feeding a child, before eating and before and after preparing food and after handling raw or live animals can help prevent the deadly disease and the virus.
