Following the recent story in the social media regarding the status of one of the projects of the Federal Ministry of Water Resourses, it is pertinent to provide the Nigerian public with the current status of the said project and to inform as follows:
That Ogwashi-uku earth dam project is located in Aboh Ogwashi in Aniocha South LGA of Delta state. The project was conceived to solve the acute water supply problems of Ogwashi-uku and its environs, support rural development as well as provide hydropower. The major components of the project are:
i. A 15m high, 280m long earthfill dam with reservoir capacity of 4mcm.
ii. A free overflow ogee concrete spillway complete with concrete lined discharge channel.
iii. A hydropower component to generate about 1MW of electricity.
iv. A 3km asphalt paved access road including the dam crest.
v. The service quarters for client’s staff.
The dam has been fully completed and impounded. It has spilled every year in 2017 and 2018. The hydropower component was stood down by the FMWR following a technical audit in 2016 which concluded that it is not viable at present because the power evacuation infrastructure (substation and transmission lines) was not part of the project ab initio. The hydro component has, however, been slated for concession to the private sector. The access road, which is a separate component, is billed for completion shortly.
A portion of the spillway wingwall was damaged by erosion during the 2018 rainy season but is now being repaired. The completion of the dam fulfills Federal Government commitment to the project. It is expected that the State Government will provide the required water supply infrastructure for the benefit of the surrounding communities as was planned.
It is noteworthy that government is a continuum and all efforts are in place to ensure that government projects are completed for the benefit of Nigerians.
