“There is the need for us all to preserve our ecosystems with nature-based solutions- Water Minister
As the Nigeria joins the global world leaders, stakeholders and water development experts to mark 2018 World Water Week, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu has called on the participants at the global event to go back to nature to find solutions to ecosystem and human development.
The Minister in an interview on Friday 24thAugust, 2018 underscored the importance of the 2018 World Water Week celebration which kicks off on the 26th August, 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Speaking on the, theme: “Water, ecosystems and human development”, the Minister stated that the theme is apt considering the impact of climate change on human and infrastructural development.
He maintained that Nature-based solutions for water will be a most practical approach in addressing climate change issues. “We should go back to nature to find solution to protecting our ecosystems”, he said. He explained that simple act of conserving water will help the country preserve water and protect the ecosystem.
Speaking further, Engr. Adamu said that all hands must be on deck in preserving water so that we will better manage the available water and not deplete the acquifer.“We can develop, achieve our developmental aspiration without necessarily destroying the ecosystems”, he said.
It will be recalled that around the globe 2018 will be remembered for record-breaking droughts, fires and floods. There is a wake-up call on the challenges that climate change, economic, population growth and increasingly unpredictable weather and water patterns impose on global water scarcity.
Over 3,300 participants from more than 130 countries will attend World Water Week representing governments, private sector, multilateral organizations, civil society and academia.
Speakers include a Nigerian, Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General United Nations and the 2018 Stockholm water prize laureates Professor Mark Van Loosdrecht and Bruce Rittmann.
