The Honourable Minister Federal Ministry of Water Resources Engr Suleiman H Adamu FNSE, FAEng on Saturday 26th June,2021 at Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State handed over the rehabilitated Seven (7) Irrigation Sectors of (KRIS-) Kano Irrigation Scheme Farmers , HadejiaJama’are River Basin Development Authority.

Speaking during the handing over Ceremony Engr. Adamu said that the Kano River Irrigation Scheme (KRIS) is one of the five existing Irrigation Schemes being rehabilitated by the Ministry under the Transformation Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project and  stated that fourteen sectors covering an area of 2,023 hectares had already been completed and handed over to the farmers while these Seven (7) newly completed sectors which includes Waire, Bagaza, Yantomo, Kadawa, Gafan, Ruga, Yakasai for handing over cover an area of 3,167 hectares.

Speaking further, the Honourable Minister said that as part of the transformation effort of the Ministry through the TRIMING Project, Technical Assistance programmes have been employed by the project to train farmers and farmers associations including River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) personnel on effective Operation and Irrigation systems as well as modern Agricultural best practices.

 The Honourable Minister therefore  expressed optimism that RBDAs will ensure that farmers and their associations take their new responsibilities with dedication by keeping the canal, drains, roads, culverts and other structures handed over to them in top working conditions at all times to justify the expenditure of time and financial resources being spent to empower them and their associations as well as the RBDA staff.

He therefore requested all involved in this transformation process to bring on maximum effort in supporting the process and ensure that in the end success will be guaranteed noting that the entire TRIMING Project is an experimental exercise by the Ministry which is planned to be rolled out to other River Basin Development Authorities across the Federation on successful completion and reporting on the performance of the project at the first instance.

The Honourable Minister equally enjoined the Contractors to double up effort to ensure that the remaining sectors are delivered on or before the agreed time.

Earlier in his Welcome address the Managing Director HadejiaJama’are River Basin Authority Kano Ma’amunDa’uAliyu stated that the Kano River Irrigation Scheme is one of the largest and most successful irrigation schemes in Nigeria. According to the MD, it is  located in Bunkure, kura and Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State with a project office at Kura.

He said that this occasion will remain memorable in the history of KRIS and the people of Kano State and also a milestone in the transformation of the irrigation ( TRIMING) sub-sector in the country

He assured the Honourable Minister that the Management of the HJRBDA, the entire staff at the headquarters and project levels are working together with the TRIMMING Project teams to make the goal of integrated and participatory management of Irrigation resources  a global best practice.

On his part, the National Coordinator TRIMING, Engr Peter YakubuManjuk said that TRIMMING has accomplished half of the projects and gave a run down of it’s activities, the main work components of the Kano State Irrigation Scheme, the Rehabilitated completed sectors/New Infrastructure for uncompleted sectors.

He stated that the milestone so far achieved was made possible by Mr President with the  Honourable Minister.

The high point of the event was handing over of the Seven Newly rehabilitated sectors to the Farmers  by the Honourable Minister Engr Suleiman H. Adamu alongside the Contractor that handled the project and the Representative of the Farmers signing the hand over document.

There was Cultural display to spice up the ceremony and the Emir of Rano represented by MakamonRano Dr YahayaIsahBaukure gave vote of thanks. He thanked the Federal government for citing the project in his community and urged farmers to make judicious use of the project.

The Honourable Minister also visited and inspected the Tiga Dam Project.
