FG INAUGURATES SHAGAMU WATER- HEALTH CENTER.
The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources has inaugurated a PEWASH Water Supply Project in Shagamu,Ogun State known as Shagamu Water-Health Centre with capacity to serve 20,000 people per day in continuation of the Federal Government’s drive of commissioning all executed projects across the Country.
The Shagamu Water Supply Project is tagged “Sustainable drinking Water Solutions” and it was constructed under the PEWASH phase II implemention programme.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu, FNSE, FAeng represented by the Director, Water Supply, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Nicholas Madu, FNSE who inaugurated the Water Supply Project on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday 26th May,2023, reiterated that Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH) is a National Multi- Sectoral Collaboration developed by the Ministry of Water Resources purposely to improve rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene geared towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals targets 6.1 and 6.2.
According to him, the Federal Government is committed to ensuring that all rural population have 100 percent access to sustainable water supply and improved sanitation towards attaining the elimination of Open Defecation in Nigeria by 2025.
He stressed that the newly commissioned Shagamu Water-health Centre and others built on a BOT agreement will be handed over to the respective LGAs after the concessionary period for operations and maintenance of the facilities in line with the Federal Government’s policy of handing over all completed facilities to either the State Governments, LGAs or directly to the beneficiary communities.
He enjoined the State Government and LGAs to own the facilities and ensure sustained management and maintenance of the centres while also, urging that center workers should be employed from the LGAs/ communities and trained in order to fulfill the contractual obligations.
Giving the overview of the water project, Mrs. Jummai Wakaso said the Water-health Centres located in five local government areas of Ogun State include, Shagamu, Shagamu LGA; Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North LGA; Sango Ota, Ado-Odo/OTA LGA; Campus Area, Odeda LGA and Ilaro and Yewa South LGA respectively.
Wakaso said that the Water-health Centres are part of Waterprenuer scheme and they are expected to be operated as such in the 5 LGAs.
Giving the breakdown of the project, she said, there are also construction of Boreholes in the 5 locations, Installation of purification system, dispensing points installation of pre-treatment units, multi-media, activated carbon filters and installation of reverse osmosis as well as the ultraviolet filter system among other very important water components.
Earlier, the Honourable Commissioner of Ogun State Rural Development, Honourable Jamiu Odetoogun represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Mr. Adewale Adetayo gave the welcome address, While HRM Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland represented by Oba M.S. Lasisi Gifarin- Odofin Soyindo Sagamu gave the royal blessing.
Present at the event were eminent personalities including the Managing Director, Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Otunba Olufemi Odumosu, Executive Director, Engineering, Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Engr. Babalola Olatunji, FNSE, Traditional Rulers and many others.
