The Federal Government has organized a 2-day retreat for the newly appointed Management Team of the 12 River Basin Development Authorities to strengthen their activities to meet best international practices.

The Honourable Minister of Water resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE, while presenting his keynote addressing during the retreat, on Friday 10th February, 2017 in Abuja, said, the purpose for the retreat was to brainstorm on better ways of understanding the workings of the RBDAs in particular and the Water sector in general.

Adamu, urged the New Management of the River Basin Development Agencies (RBDAs), to exhibit probity, transparency and accountability in their operations as well as to be strategic and be able to generate more revenues.

He added that, the resolution of the past retreat was to develop a blueprint and action plan to resuscitate and further develop the RBDAs to align their activities to the most important component of this administration’s Change Agenda, which is agricultural development and job creation therefore.

According to the Minister, “The RBDAs are attracting a lot of attention now; we also got a presentation by the Nigerian Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL). He added that that some months ago the ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sovereign Wealth Investment Authority, and has been getting a lot of request from commercial farmers, big time commercial farmers to come and engage to invest in the River Basins.

However, the Minister urged the new Managing Directors of the RBDA,s to be strategic and to think out of the box to generate revenue.

The Director Department of River Basin Development and Inspectorate of the ministry, Dr. Musa Ibrahim said that the purpose for the change of Management of the River Basins is a policy decision which was initiated to positively reposition the River Basins for optimum productivity.

Ibrahim, quoting the Minister during the inauguration of the Management Team, said “your appointments are well deserved, based on merit, capacity and integrity.” He urged them not to do anything to jeopardize or betray the trust and confidence of the Honorable Minister has placed upon you.

The ministry has lined up high caliber professionals as resource persons to present papers to participants during the 2-day retreat as part of its effort to build their capacities for the task ahead.
