2. Born Friday thirtieth July, 1954, because the fifth of his mother and father’ 10 kids, Darius Dickson Ishaku, skilled as
an architect on the Ahmadu Bello College, Zaria. He made out time final week, to talk about his mission in authorities, the issues of his state; its huge
arid land and the untapped potential for tourism; the crises of
management that set the state aside from the remaining since
2012 and why the nation wants a brand new orientation in the direction of electioneering.

He spoke to KUNLE SOMORIN

For the primary time in his forty days within the saddle because the govt governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, confessed
he solely had a very good sleep the night time earlier
than he was sworn in. Taking away his sleep are the myriad of challenges of governance, growth and safety of Tarabans.
Like most governors, he additionally claimed to have met an empty treasury and elevating
funds to show the rural state to at least one enormous development site has taken a toll on the psyche of the skilled
architect turned politician.

It has been forty days because you have been sworn in as
govt governor of Taraba State. How has it been?

The journey has been robust and tortuous, nevertheless it has been fulfilling.
The lack of funds has made it fairly daunting, particularly for somebody like me, who has bought lots of imaginative and
prescient for the state. I got here with a lot zeal to trigger the state to rise, however
confronted with lack of funds, it has been an enormous set-again for me.
Nevertheless, we’re occurring and, by the grace of God, we’ll succeed.

The primary main process, I consider, shall be turning the fortunes of the state round.
How are you hoping to do that within the face of paucity of funds?

To begin with, I’ve been negotiating with our bankers.
We now have been speaking in regards to the heavy loans
we need to repay and the way we will unfold the cost of the curiosity fairly, in order
that it may be simpler to pay and provides us some lee-means for capital improvement after which create an avenue to sort out the problems which hassle
the individuals of Taraba probably the most.

Quickly, we hope, we are going to obtain some outcomes from that finish and get the wanted alternative
to start infrastructural growth in earnest.

I don’t consider that a governor ought to simply come and keep for 4 years
paying solely salaries. Even for the salaries, I’ve my
doubts. To that finish, we’re finishing up employees verification to plug the leakages and, although we can pay sooner than individuals assume, I’ve big doubts in regards to the wage figures of this state.
For a state as small as Taraba, the wage invoice is just too heavy.
The truth that we even need to get loans at intervals to pay these salaries, requires some inward trying.

You talked about an enormous debt. What was the precise state of the
treasury once you assumed workplace?

Really, the treasury was fairly empty. When the transition committee
handed over to me, the state was in debt to the tune
of N30bn and nonetheless counting, as a result of a few of these debts
keep popping up within the course of governance. That mentioned, I’m equal to the duty and can do my greatest to make do with what I’ve.

You simply stated you are attempting to confirm employees
employment standing. Which means some folks might lose their jobs.
Although you promised the folks extra jobs throughout your marketing campaign, just lately,
it was revealed that you’ve positioned an embargo on employment within the state.

What knowledgeable that call?

Sure, I promised throughout my marketing campaign that
I might create jobs for the younger individuals within the state
who haven’t any employment. Nevertheless, earlier than my coming, there had been recruitment workouts which
didn’t conform to the requirements of the civil service within the state.
Lots of people discovered themselves getting employment exterior due
course of – even individuals who usually are not from the state
– however I’ve ordered that each employment letter issued between 2012 and the current time ought to be suspended.
I need to confirm, that is all. I didn’t terminate their appointments
as was wrongly revealed. If we confirm and somebody’s providers are actually wanted, we are going to interact that individual,
but when we confirm in any other case, that particular person’s
service wouldn’t be wanted any longer.

Why ought to you utilize somebody as a instructor and the particular person can hardly
write his personal identify? That’s one working example.

All we wish to do is sieve the wheat from the chaff. When we’re executed with sieving and we see what we give
you, we will present them with employment – which is the intention, anyway, however just for these whose companies are wanted and
employable. The chaff shall be carried out away with.

Given the clamour for extra states and the case of most states presently in want
of funds to pay the wage of civil servants, do you assume the decision for extra states is justified?

A state must be able to cater for the wants of her residents.
Thankfully, I used to be one among those that clamoured for the creation of Taraba State and drew the map with the late Inusa
Yerima. One of many circumstances we have been given was to offer enough proof that the state may pay the salaries of its
civil servants.

Now, as governor, we’re not accumulating something close to paying the civil servants.

The IGR (internally generated income) could be very low,
not as a result of we don’t have the potential; we do,
however on account of plenty of issues that are occurring; poorly pushed IGR, too many leakages
within the state’s funds and so forth. So, there may be lots to be
performed to drive the IGR correctly, to stop the leakages.
One of many targets of the current verification train is to
cease the leakages within the state.

One other problem you’ll face is that of safety; cattle-rustling, inter-ethnic rivalry and killings within the inside elements of the state.
How are you going about tackling this headache?

Let me right you; we’re already tackling them, not
“hoping to sort out them,” as you stated. I used to
be in Takum for a gathering between the Jukun, Kutep, Chamba and different ethnic teams in that a part of the state.
I suggested them on the necessity to study to dwell peaceably.

The Jukun-Kutep-Chamba-Tiv strife was because of land disputes.
Because of the inhabitants explosion among the many ethnic
folks, the land which belongs to us is being encroached on by these from Benue and the ethnic individuals inside
the state are fairly sad about that. Finally, it’s a query
of coming to know each other and reside as amicably as we
are able to by accommodating each other.

When you progress additional to Wukari axis, you’ve got the ethno-religious unrest.
That scenario has been on for years and, I dare say it was sponsored by some people to create tension and,
consequently, depopulate the realm. Hitherto, that space was peaceful and
there was harmonious co-existence between the ethnic folks.
Presently, now we have calmed the individuals and we’re working fairly
laborious to see that peace returns to the world. I’m attempting
to get to the neighborhood stage and construct from there, as
an alternative of going from prime-to-backside.
I’ve been suggested by the leaders of those communities that will probably be
higher to get to the people who find themselves concerned within the battle and
that’s sensible.

If you progress to the boundary between Benue and Nasarawa, the insurgence which you talked about includes the Fulani from Nasarawa State.
They cross the River Benue and strike towns like Chinkaye, Kente and different areas round that
axis. Now we have deployed police patrols
to these areas and we’re doing the most effective we
are able to to pre-empt some strikes which have been as soon as incessant.

Transferring upwards from Decrease Benue to Ibi, the insurgents come from throughout the Benue,
on the opposite finish of Nasarawa State to
kill farmers in areas like Ibi and the inhabitants.
That’s being curtailed too.

If you progress up the stream, in Ibi native authorities, the boundary with Plateau,
the cattle-rustlers give them numerous headache.
These ones are thieves and criminals, not insurgents.
That crime is dedicated by numerous ethnic individuals,
not only one.

I perceive that an area authorities in Plateau State has put in conventional rulers in two of those villages in Taraba State.

Who gave them employees of workplace?

That is a matter which I must resolve with my colleague in Plateau state,
in order that we could make the folks protected once more throughout our borders.

In Donga space, the Tivs, for some motive we haven’t recognized, are having an intra-tribal disagreement, however we’re recording
success. Should you ask me, it’s not ok, (the
hassle) as a result of we’d like to place
an finish to all of the dangerous blood. We can’t perform all the event which we would like with this stuff
occurring as properly.

The place will one start with out peace as a mattress-rock?
How can I get to those locations when the persons are at their throats
on a regular basis?

You additionally want a group, however that has not occurred but.
What’s the explanation for the delay?

Like I instructed you earlier, paucity of funds has not
helped points. Additionally, by the point you get full-fledged commissioners, it’s a burden for the state, as
a result of it’s a must to be sure you understand how they are going to be accommodated, their mobility, places of work, budgets,
allowances and so on. All these are tied to the present salaries we’re struggling to
pay. Secondly, it provides you room to get the precise individuals.
I’ve been appointing folks, however when you discover,
it’s at a slower fee, in order to make sure that these I invite on-board can have the capability, know-how and be on the identical pedestal as we’re to drive the state.

Taraba State is blessed with huge arable land for agriculture.
Additionally, it has enormous tourism potential
however sadly, nothing a lot has been accomplished about these sectors of the state’s economic system, which have the potential to make the state viable.
What’s going to your administration do to scale-up the
extent of agricultural improvement within the state?

Taraba is actually blessed with fertile land. By way of agriculture,
Taraba is the most effective if not the most effective.
Greater than half of the yams consumed in our nation come from
Taraba. On this state, something grows, even with out fertilisers.

We had two traders which started processing sugar
from cane sugar, however the tempo died off, form of. Presently, we
are attempting to settle a couple of points and get them
again into it. If it goes full-scale, it may possibly make use of as much as 15 to 30 folks.

The identical could be stated for rice manufacturing
in Gassol. All of the equipment have been imported
and they’re already on site for the previous 18 months.
We’re ironing out the problems and, when we’re achieved, it has the capability to make use of greater than 30,000 to 60, 000 individuals.
That may contribute vastly to the employment drive and
create a big impact on the human capital growth of the state.
We’re working assiduously to make sure that each farms come afloat
as rapidly as doable. In the event you ask me when, I can say yesterday.

Taraba can also be the very best vacationer centre within the nation, if you happen to ask me.
I even informed the previous president that every time he needs to go for a retreat,
he ought to consider coming to Mambilla. That’s one of the best a part of the
nation. The weather is cool, the temperature hardly goes past 22oc and 23oc.
The local weather over there’s temperate and
good for cattle-rearing. It’s one of the best place for tea
and espresso. Our tea manufacturing facility
is there and doing very properly with the fixed energy provide, due to the
United Nations’ Growth Organisation (UNIDO). Any second now, the UNIDO folks
will name for commissioning of the hydro-electric plant
which can present day by day energy provide to the world.

It’s a haven of tourism, however there are a couple of issues;
how does one get there? How does one talk to folks that such a spot
exists and make sure that they’ve a nice time once they go there?

You do not simply have tourism for the sake of it; it have to be engaging to folks.
Additionally, you need to have the ability to get the
individuals there. Mambilla has a excessive altitude and having an airport up there will
not be proper. Nevertheless, an airport must be shut by to air-carry
folks to the closest place the place they will take a cab.

There may be nothing like that. We wouldn’t have trains,
it may have been higher to take a practice there.
The one means now we have of getting folks up there’s highway transport and we’re working to get
the street accomplished. There’s want for a 5-star lodge in that space, golf course, resort and all kinds of infrastructure which can please vacationers.

The highway is lengthy and tortuous however Taraba will work once more.

This I promise.

Do not you suppose that a correctly structured personal-public-partnership can simply get this finished with
out the state sinking all her sources into it?

Nicely, we’re engaged on a correct PPP mannequin, however we want an enabling setting within the
state. We’re additionally doing that. We’re placing ending touches
to our airport in Jalingo. That’s the primary port of
name. If you’re taking a flight from Abuja, in 50 minutes you might be in Jalingo.
If a chopper lifts you from there, in 10 or quarter-hour, you’re on the plateau.

We’re working onerous with Kashimbilla, one other vacationer vacation spot within the southern tip
of the state – the place we have now a 40mw energy station – to get these items up and working.
The multi-goal dam has been accomplished and all that’s
left is only a few particulars. Surprisingly, we’ve got bought certification for the airport in Kashimbilla which
might take smaller aircrafts. Kashimbilla is 35 minutes from Abuja by air and, should you get right here
and a chopper lifts you to Mambilla, you’ll be there in 10 minutes.
These are the issues which the federal government has to place in place earlier than the
non-public people can are available. Which individuals will throng
this place? Folks from throughout our nation and past – Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos, Port Harcourt,
simply title it.

We’re engaged on that and that i pray that God will create avenues for us to
get extra funds to see this by.

A number of teams have discredited the elections from which you emerged.

Your celebration, the Peoples Democratic Social gathering (PDP) received within the
state and misplaced within the presidential election. Are
you satisfied that the election was free and honest?

For sure, I’m completely satisfied of the fairness of the election on the
state degree. Remember, we performed the election twice and that i gained at the primary occasion, however was denied victory.
It was not inconclusive; it was an election that was concluded,
however some folks someplace truncated it. We went for a second election which I even gained greater than the primary.

What are you saying? I, Daruis Ishaku, can’t sit in my
home and want to be a governor only for the sake
of it. I have to earn it from the individuals.
I should be voted for, if the folks didn’t vote me,
I can not go to the court docket.

I enchantment to all politicians that they need to
have an enormous coronary heart. Jonathan may have additionally taken President Buhari to
court docket, however he opted to congratulate him. What stops the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) from following that instance?
Taraba is a PDP state. We’ve got three senators.
Of the six, we’ve got 4 Home ofRepresentatives members. Within the
state home of meeting, we’re virtually 17. Taraba has been PDP
since 1999 and they’re nonetheless PDP and so they voted me.
I don’t desire to hitch points as a result of it continues to
be within the tribunal. However, let if suffice to say that I’m
the governor who went to the polls twice and acquired it proper twice.
The file is there. They cancelled the outcomes for Donga native authorities which has 160 wards,
simply because 5 wards had points. I did not say a phrase.

Is that honest? You say this nation belongs to all of us, however we have to be seen to be truthful and do what’s right.
Politicians should study to simply accept defeat.

The state belongs to all of us, whether or not we’re within the PDP
or APC, so we should come collectively to guantee that
the individuals of Taraba revenue vastly from our administration.

When you had misplaced would you may have congratulated your opponent?

If the previous president, my boss, might try this, why would not I?

The water which we now take pleasure in within the state capital and the elevated megawatts we will now boast of doesn’t have PDP imprinted on it;
it’s for the individuals of the state. Everyone seems to be having fun with it.
The entire concept is to provide service to the folks.
I’m doing it and can proceed to take action.

Within the final two years, Taraba has produced three chief executives.

What’s the rationale behind the management disaster within the state?

There isn’t any management disaster in Taraba State.
What occurred was that we have been unlucky.
Our former governor, Danbaba Suntai, was a properly-liked man, beloved to a fault, however for the
unlucky accident in October 2012.

Shortly earlier than that accident, he appointed a deputy governor who he had by no means labored with or
knew a lot about. They didn’t even marketing campaign collectively.
This fellow got here in uncooked and new, with no correct
information of the state and the way it really works.

He had no administrative expertise. Consequently,
his administration was hijacked and he was misled by energy brokers.
The remainder, they are saying, is historical
past. So, we don’t have any management disaster right here.
Taraba may be very peaceful and, assuredly, inside
the subsequent few years, the peace we as soon as loved will return. Solely, the individuals need to assist
his administration to get it proper. We are able to do all issues
by the grace of God. Quickly, precise bodily developments might be on floor and the folks might be
pleased with them.

3. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Admini-stration (FCTA), Malam Muhammad Bello has mentioned
that emphasis should to be positioned on higher service supply if the nation have been to unbundle the tourism sector and make it
a serious income earner.

Bello stated this when a delegation from the Nationwide Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), paid him a courtesy
go to at his workplace.

In line with the FCT Minister, the complaint usually by
most folks that go to the nation is that the standard of
service being supplied is just not ok when in contrast to what’s obtainable in different climes.

He stated, “A lot of individuals get postpone by the best way we obtain them on the airports, the best way we deal with them within the buses, the best way deal with them on the lodge reception factors, the way in which we clear their rooms and the way in which we offer them service usually. I believe if as Nigerians we’re ready to essentially enhance on that facet, it’s going to be an enormous catalyst in making an attempt to revamp and actually get the total potential of the tourism sector.”

Bello mentioned operators within the sector should
change their angle in direction of service supply by making certain that the setting is clear
and accessible services work to optimum requirements in the event that they have
been to show across the fortunes of the business.

An announcement issued by his Particular Assistant (Media),
Abubakar Sani, the Minister mentioned: “We must work on service supply. It’s not likely the standard or sophistication of what we offer. Among the locations you go, you discover that basically, the furnishings is straightforward, domestically made, the buildings are domestically made. However the services work. The cleanliness is emphasised”.

He reiterated the willingness of the FCT Administration to accomplice with the stakeholders within the tourism sector by making accessible
correct information of all vacationer locations within the
FCT in addition to services for the coaching and retraining of manpower within the sector.

He stated, “The social secretariat will offer you all what we have now by way of vacationer websites, by way of services that we have now that might function assembly factors as you prepare, amenities which have some semblance of accommodation you could home youngsters that you simply need to prepare for every week or two.

“So, any requirement that may contain partnering with you and the opposite companies will, we’ll
do it. Within the FCT inside our businesses, we’ve models and departments
actually particularly meant to cater for this and previously,
we’ve had a variety of interventions,” the Minister emphasised.

Bello whereas stressing that the FCT Administration shares the imaginative and prescient of reaching an enormous turnaround within the tourism sector, nevertheless known as for synergy amongst the main gamers within the business.

Earlier in her remarks, the DG, NIHOTOUR, Mrs. Chika Balogun stated there’s must reposition the FCT to develop into a serious vacation spot that can appeal to conferences, not solely inside Nigeria however from the West African sub-area in addition to the remainder of the world.

“We need to be a convention vacation spot that is definitely devoted to
going to solicit for these issues and doing all
of the needful for us to start to draw conferences to Nigeria.

It’s an indication of very massive enterprise and one low hanging fruit that we will very simply pluck.

“We will prefer to associate with you in phrases of coaching and retraining the manpower throughout the FCT. We want to be your primary accomplice in phrases of coaching particularly inside the hospitality and tourism trade,” the DG mentioned.

4. One way or the other, the disturbing video launched by a faction of the Boko Haram insurgents exhibiting remnants
of the kidnapped schoolgirls from a secondary college in Chibok over two years again rekindles some hope, particularly for his
or her traumatised households. Whereas acknowledging that it’s an extended technique to any
rescue or negotiation for his or her launch, it’s nonetheless intriguing that a few of
these women are nonetheless alive and will at some point inform
the story of an abduction saga that has not solely been politicised however has additionally polarised the nation. However,
it’s coronary heart wrenching that the insurgents additionally insinuated that
whereas forty of the ladies had been married out, fairly a variety of
them had been felled by army mortars when Sambisa forest got here underneath assault within the on-going warfare towards terrorism within the North-East.
Despite denial by the navy and the next launch of a video indicating a
strategic bombardment of the insurgents’ hideout, it’s not inconceivable that a
few of the women may have ended up as collateral injury in a struggle during which
the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces and
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Basic Muhammadu Buhari, has repeatedly claimed he lacked dependable intelligence.
If we should face the crying fact, we should settle for the truth
that nothing is inconceivable in a conflict of this magnitude.

Having mentioned that, I don’t perceive why the federal government is enjoying
the ostrich and needlessly turning into edgy when Chibok is
talked about. The time for the blame recreation is much-gone.

If we condemned former President Goodluck Jonathan for ready too
lengthy earlier than rallying spherical the dad and mom of the
kidnapped ladies, there isn’t a approach President Buhari would escape the stick for his
refusal to personally meet the Convey Again Our Women protesters on the Pilot
Gate of Aso Rock on Monday. To the better of my data, the
mother and father and their leaders didn’t include harmful cudgels to precise their dissatisfaction with how the current authorities has been dealing with this moderately delicate matter.
They merely marched to the presidential Villa to
faucet on the President’s humanity contemplating that he had beforehand assured them
of some type of respite throughout his campaigns. In case
these in authorities have forgotten, the unlucky incident in Chibok performed a significant function in Jonathan’s ouster.
However for his shoddy dealing with of the abduction,
the extended keep of motion while residing in denial till Madam Persistence Jonathan’s melodrama
that went viral, I doubt if Jonathan wouldn’t have
pulled one other electoral victory over Buhari.

The All Progressives Congress can not deny that it feasted on the Chibok tragedy to
redefine how shamelessly clueless the Jonathan Presidency had
turn out to be. It additionally used it to hearth its change mantra and thousands and
thousands of Nigerians purchased into it. Every time the then President
tried to drag his weight and intimidate the opposition occasion, he was reminded of the pitiable picture of a pacesetter that was dancing on the
graves of the charred stays of victims of the Nyanya bombings on a day the abduction of over 276 senior college
students from Authorities Secondary Faculty, Chibok befell.
That day continues to be contemporary in our memories—April 14, 2014.
The President’s thriller was compounded by the truth that the safety businesses recklessly misinformed the general public on the true standing of the abduction,
because the preliminary data was that the majority of the ladies have been rescued and have been safely with their dad
and mom. We have been all witnesses to how this harvest of errors was
exploited to nail Jonathan together with his navy chiefs huffing and puffing a couple of rescue operation that
by no means happened.

Greater than two years after, nobody is denying that the dynamics are now not the identical.
The truth is, the story of the Chibok 276 is step by step disappearing from the entrance
pages. The countdown from the date of abduction that was completely on the entrance pages of some nationwide dailies
has given approach to one thing extra commercially viable.
Hope has truly fizzled out apart the dedication of the remnants of the Carry Again Our Ladies protesters, who always remind us that the Buhari authorities seems to be going mute on the
matter. Nonetheless, with the not too long ago launched video, we’re again to the place we abandoned the discourse.
Furthermore, the query to ask is quite simple: Will these
ladies ever return house?

I perceive the President’s reported petulant irritation towards the angle of among the mother and father and leaders of the Deliver
Again Women group. I additionally know that that is one case
that’s sure to check anyone’s persistence.
However then, that’s the reason he’s the President.
Being a frontrunner in a rustic with diversified pursuits isn’t
a tea social gathering and Buhari must know that. Was he anticipating the psychologically and
emotionally drained mother and father to be of fine cheer whereas asking
him to satisfy his promise to rescue the ladies?
Apart from, it could price the President nothing if he had taken the pains to personally take heed to the “rants” of the dad and mom and agitators
regardless of how discomfiting a number of the cries could also be to his ears.
Doing this won’t solely reassure the aggrieved dad and mom that they’ve the ears of the President, it will
even function a public relations stunt for a President whose public acceptance ranking slides each day.
That was a chance missed.

If Chibok mattered within the 2015 elections, let nobody make the error of considering that it won’t play a
significant function within the 2019 poll. Already, the mother and father
and folks of Chibok have expressed fears that they had been used to realize a
political aim after which they’ve been left to chew their ache.
They stated the interview granted by one of many rescued ladies,
Amina Ali Nkeki, was a propagandist software exploited by the federal government to attain low-cost emotional and political mileage.

Amina had instructed a international media
outfit that she missed her Boko Haram husband whom she had
a baby for. Now, that was a joke carried too far
even when we perceive what knowledgeable that place.
Now, Amina’s dad and mom see the discharge of the video as a deliberate try by
the federal government to use the miserable video to its
benefit. The allegation won’t be true nevertheless it offers an inkling into the pondering of these who’re suffering the ache and
who need an finish to this lengthy-operating tragic impulses.

Nobody could be extra relieved than the mother and
father of the abducted kids if this matter is ultimately delivered to an finish.
Esther Yakubu, mom of Dorcas who known as on the federal government to ship them from the grip of the insurgents in the newest
Boko Haram video, was proper when she stated the battle couldn’t finish
with out remaining phrases on the plight of the ladies. At the
least, that was what the President promised them.

So, what number of have been married off, useless or residing?

What number of could be fortunate to return dwelling both by means of negotiations or rescue mission? I wish to imagine that the dad and mom
aren’t that irrationally optimistic to not know that there can be casualties of warfare from each sides of the divide.
What angers them is the laud silence, the President’s shocking righteous rage and a seeming
ebbing of the Chibok saga into oblivion. They had been rattling proper in insisting
that the logical factor to do was for the federal government to guard the privateness
of the few rescued ones as a substitute of permitting the slip that made Amina to sound like
an ingrate. These are germane factors that the President
would have addressed if he had personally interacted with the protesters final Monday.
It was a chance misplaced!

In plain language, what’s lacking is belief.

Buhari needs to be trusted not solely by the dad and mom however by the generality of Nigerians.
The one method that may occur is when he begins to stroll
his speak and desist from enjoying a ‘maradonic’
pranks on us like his predecessor did. Because the mother and father stated, the ‘proof of life’ video issued by the insurgents “should provoke the Federal Authorities and its safety apparatus to motion to rescue the remaining 218 girls”.
If Amina Ali Nkeki was really within the custody
of the federal government since her rescue and she was but to be handed over to
her dad and mom, how did the overseas media get entry to her?
These mother and father could also be undergoing unimaginable anguish however
they know they can’t belief a authorities whose safety businesses got
here out with a report that Abubakar Shekau had
been significantly injured within the battlefield. After they take a deep
pulse, they’d ask: Which Shekau? The one which was stated to have been killed on three totally different
events previously with video proof or his alter ego?

You see why Chibok issues past the current flip-flop
and shocking revelations that merely compound an already sorry case?
How far more would the dad and mom of those women wait earlier than somebody can look them
within the face and inform them the blunt reality, the entire fact
and nothing however the reality? How lengthy?

stated leaders additionally revealed that their safety departments are more and more changing into advanced
environments with sixty five per cent of organisations
utilizing from six to greater than 50 safety merchandise, growing
the potential for safety effectiveness gaps.

To take advantage of these gaps, ACR information confirmed criminals main a resurgence of basic assault vectors,
equivalent to adware and electronic mail spam, the latter at ranges not
seen since 2010. Spam accounted for practically two-thirds (sixty five per
cent) of electronic mail with eight to 10 per cent, cited as malicious
mails. International spam quantity is rising, typically unfold by massive and thriving botnets.

The final Supervisor, Cisco Nigeria, Olakunle Oluruntimehin, who spoke in Lagos, mentioned

that persons are extra weak to cybercrimes.

He stated: “That is why we leverage our companions, the Cisco Networking Academy programme and certifications along with typical buyer enablement actions to develop our safety market share. We’ve got a rising record of over 300 companions in Nigeria protecting safety in verticals like retail, monetary companies, oil, healthcare, hospitality and public sector. We’ve over 130 academies in Nigeria and have extra academies becoming a member of this quantity on a quarterly foundation.

“This 12 months, cyber is enterprise, and enterprise is cyber – that requires

Relentless enchancment is required and that ought to be measured
by way of efficacy, price, and properly managed danger.
The ACR demonstrates and justifies, solutions to our struggles on finances,
personnel, innovation and structure.”

Cybersecurity has modified drastically because the inaugural Cisco Annual Safety Report in 2007. Whereas know-how has helped assaults change into extra damaging and defences turn out to be extra refined, the muse of safety stays as vital as ever. In 2007, the ACR reported net and enterprise functions had been targets, usually through social engineering, or consumer-launched infractions. In 2017, hackers assault cloud-primarily based functions, and spam has escalated.

The 2017 ACR studies that simply fifty six per cent of safety alerts are investigated and lower than half of legit alerts remediated. Defenders, whereas assured of their instruments, battle complexity and manpower challenges, leaving gaps of time and house for attackers to utilise to their benefit.

Cisco advises organisations to take steps to forestall, detect, and mitigate threats and minimise danger. These steps embrace making safety a enterprise precedence; government management should personal and evangelise safety and fund it as a precedence. Operational self-discipline have to be measured whereas assessment of safety practices, patch, and management entry factors to community techniques, functions, capabilities, and information should be taken significantly.

It referred to as for take a look at safety effectiveness and institution of clear metrics which must be used to validate and enhance safety practices. Undertake an built-in defence method and make integration and automation excessive on the checklist of evaluation standards to extend visibility, streamline interoperability, and scale back the time to detect and cease assaults. 10. Stuart Bowen said; “what’s happened is an incessant,
an insidious insurgency has assaulted the essential infrastructure objectives, reducing outputs”.
Therefore, insurgency negatively influences the overall development of a nation, and
insurgency has adversely impacted Nigeria as a state.

Firstly, against terrorism, Nigeria appeared invulnerable previously, and they’ve
several times aided other nations in countering terrorism.
Consequently, the Boko Haram insurgency Nigeria is at present faced which has demonstrated that Nigeria is prone to terrorist and terrorism attacks.
Second, the earnings that will be used to carry out other

11. My grandmother always told me that Abacha is not a meal.

Though it can be as filling as any other main course meal,
African Salad is usually eaten as an in-between meal.

How to Make Abacha with Ugba

I remember vividly how my grandma prepared Abacha as soon as she came back
from the Eke or Afor market, garnished with a generous serving of garden eggs
and the leaves, with some dry fish. Oh, I will never forget the
long vacations spent at grandma’s place.

Abacha is prepared with cassava. The cassava tubers are
cooked till done then sliced with a special cutter. The sliced cassava
is then soaked in cold water overnight, washed thoroughly and dried under the

Your African Salad will not be complete without Ugba. Ugba, also known as Ukpaka, is made from oil bean seeds.
These seeds are cooked for several hours then sliced, washed and fermented for
a few days.

Ingredients for Abacha

The following are the complete ingredients you need to
make a delicious African Salad. I will group the ingredients

Making the African Salad

The key to making a good African Salad is to make sure that all the ingredients
are well incorporated. As you will see below, there’s
a lot of add this, stir, add that, stir. You may wonder why you can’t
just add everything and stir but if you do that, it will be very difficult for
you to get a good blend of all the ingredients.

You are done! Eat with chilled palm wine for the full effects 🙂

12. When I ran for Senate five years ago, we were sneered at by the political
establishment of the central senatorial constituency of our great State.
But I had implicit confidence in the Almighty and I knew I had
a natural connection with my real constituency: the desperate,
the disenchanted, the disinherited, the despised, the despondent,
the dejected and the embarrassed. Together we galvanized and reached great heights in the Senate.

Today our record has become a standard of performance for legislative representation.

It is with God as my guide and the same constituency of mine across the State as my inspiration, that I reached
a personal decision to run for Governor of our great State of Kogi.
I run not to take the turn of any ethnic group or any
other district, nor because I have the best certificate or the longest experience.
I run out of firm belief that Kogi can achieve greater
heights; I run to truly unify and liberate our people and our State, and
above all I run because I bring a unique blend of qualities well suited to this time; capacity,
experience, network, strong will, boundless energy and youthfulness, and most significantly,
unmatchable passion and commitment to public service.

Paraphrasing the former American President Lyndon Johnson, we are one State and one people,
our fate as a State and our future as a people rest not upon one citizen or one ethnic group, but upon all citizens and all ethnic groups in the State.
This is the majesty and meaning of this moment, and this is the
meaning of my opening quotation above.

I empathize with our workers across the State that have been owed many months wages; I empathize with our citizens
who don’t even earn wages because there are no jobs available.
In this State of great latent wealth, families must not live in hopeless poverty.
In a land of learning with great scholars, our children must be taught well by qualified teachers.
In a State with such beautiful and spectacular landscapes, the cities/towns must not
be so rural.

Over the past 8 years in which I have served this nation, and over many more as a
private citizen, I have believed that this injustice to our people, this waste
of our resources is our real enemy. For 8 years and with the resources I have been blessed with, I have learned and
I know that the injustice will fight back and it is fighting back.

But the change of our great party, the All Progressive Party (APC), ably led and
symbolized by President Muhammad Buhari has given us new weapons.
And before this generation of Kogites and indeed
Nigerians are finished, this enemy will not only retreat, it will be
conquered (Insha Allah).

This electioneering period and this transition shall
symbolize an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well
as change. For it is time for big ideas and
giant strides. This great State has been acknowledged as having
enormous potential by those who live, work, visit and pass through.

My team and I, working with your support and co-operation, envision a Kogi
that will be defined by rapid growth and development over the next four years, for the benefit of
all who live, work and visit, unmatched by any region of
her size and character in Africa.

Over these next four years, our great State will bring opportunities within reach of all.
We shall ensure that all our citizens can identify and take advantage of existing and emerging opportunities
and can do so in a secure and free environment. Security
is essential for our State to be able to unleash her enormous potential and tap the massive ingenuity of our
citizens. They must be made to feel safe and at ease within our borders.
That is why we will develop a special kind of relationship with all security agencies to rid the State of kidnapping, robbery and assassination episodes
across the State. This relationship shall be driven by the

Education is the key that provides access to opportunities – the evidence is
irrefutable. Kogi will have the development of our children and youth
across all ages at the forefront. Basic education will be highly
subsidized initially and free in the long run. It shall
be of demonstrably high quality, matching the best standards in the
world. We will ensure that all our children attend and stay in school.

They will acquire skills and knowledge driven by current and future needs and the demands of industry and the economy.
Finally, a State of emergency will be declared to rework and revamp
this very fundamental sector.

Health care is just as important as education. Aside the need
of our people to stay healthy, productive and happy, the visitors and investors we hope to attract to the State are going to need assurance of
adequate care and reaction in case of emergency.
A state of emergency will also be declared in this sector, as we improve
the collection, storage and monitoring of patient data
by implementing Electronic Health.

Records (EHR) systems and improved personnel development, by
establishing more health institutions to train nurses and other allied health workers, utilizing modern and advanced curricula.

We shall, through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), improve our healthcare system and seek to promote medical
tourism to the State.

As we move quickly towards making our State
a commercial and industrial hub, we will embark on massive expansion, upgrade and

13. The police are holding 23 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials for their
roles in the Rivers State rerun elections.
Besides, the Special Investigation Panel has asked
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to release the agency’s administrative secretaries in Anambra and Plateau states for interrogation.

The police informed INEC of the arrests in two letters to the chairman by the Chairman of the Special Joint Investigation Panel,
DCP Damian Okoro. The letters, which were exclusively obtained by
The Nation, indicated that “further development will be communicated to INEC chairman.”

The first letter reads in part: “I write to inform you of the arrest of the under-listed staff of the commission who served in the 10th December 2016 Rivers State National/State Legislative re-run elections.

“The names of the officers and present posting are: Ewatade
P. Taiwo (Oyo); Aminu Karimu (Oyo); Adedokun Najeem Ayotunde (Oyo); Balogun Funmilayo (Oyo); Agams O.
Kadiri (Oyo); Akinwande R. Adesoji(Oyo); Lukeman Olabimpe(Oyo);
Tiamiyu R. Arowolo(Oyo); Akinwoye Amodu A (Anambra) and Iro Abali

“Others are Enuke Patrick(Anambra); Nwosu Oluchi G.(Anambra); Arukwe Chinelo(Anambra); Henry Owokure(Anambra); Nwoha Yusuf(Anambra); Hussaina Yahaya Tanko(Plateau); Gayus Hassan(Plateau); Ivase Stephen Aondona(Plateau); Abdullahi Ogabo(Plateau); Gwatana Jibril Joseph( Plateau); and Mohammed L. Sittu(Plateau).”

The second letter, which is dated January 16, 2017, states: “My earlier letter dated 13th January 2017 in respect of the arrest of 21 electoral officers who served as Electoral Officers in the 10th December 2016 Rivers State National/ State Legislative re-run elections refers.

“I wish to inform you that Mrs. Mary Tunkoyo, the electoral
officer at Emohua LGA and Mr. James Ogwuche who
served as electoral officer at Ahoada West LGA are also in custody of the panel.

“More so, in the course of the investigation, the need to seek certain clarification/information from the Administrative Secretaries of Anambra and Plateau states has become imperative.

“You are kindly requested to inform and release the two officers for
interview at the Special Joint Investigation Panel at Commissioners Lounge, Ground Floor, Nigeria Police Force Headquarters,

“The panel is questioning some of those invited.

“One key area of investigation which led to the invitation of the electoral officers borders on alleged bribery of poll officers, interference with voting process by politicians and outright snatching of ballot boxes. These electoral officers are at advantage in giving more insights into what happened during the re-run elections,” a source said, adding:

“So far, all the officers are innocent until the investigation panel establishes any case beyond reasonable doubt against them.” The
15-man panel, headed by DCP Damien Okoro, comprises the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) with investigative,
forensic and technical experts.

“The panel is to
• Conduct a thorough investigation into the role of security agents before, during and after the election;
• examine the role of any police officer or security agent whose actions or activities individually or collectively was detrimental to the good conduct of the elections;
• conduct a forensic analysis on the audio report released by Sahara Reporters as it concerns the election.
• examine any other matter that is relevant to the conduct of the elections, and make recommendations and implementation strategies to guide future elections.’

But Wike on Monday approached the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court for an order stopping the probe. In the ex-parte motion by his counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome( SAN,), Wike prayed the court to “restrain the defendants or their agents from enforcing
or executing matters contained in a letter the IGP wrote to Wike on December 20,
2016 on the probe”.

14. The Federal High Court, Abuja on Monday ordered Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State to vacate his office immediately.

The Judge, Justice Okon Abang, gave the order
when he delivered a judgment in a case instituted by Samson Ogah of the Peoples Democratic
Party in Abuja.
Ogah had accused Ikpeazu of submitting false information in his tax clearance certificate to the party during the governorship
primaries in the state.
Abang ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to
issue a certificate of return to Ogah as the duly elected governor of Abia State.

He said the court relied on the Supreme Court decisions in the case of Obi vs INEC and Ameachi vs INEC to make the consequential order.

The court said Ogah, a PDP gubernatorial aspirant in the 2015 election in Abia State, was entitled to the certificate of return in the election held in April 2015.

Abang said: “It is hereby ordered that INEC, the third defendant, should immediately issue certificate of return to Dr. Samson Ogah as governor of Abia State in the election held in 2015 and restore to him all the entitlements as the elected governor of Abia.
“Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu is hereby ordered to vacate office as governor
of Abia immediately relying on the decision of the Supreme Court
in INEC vs Obi.”
Abang held that the tax clearance certificate and income tax receipts submitted by Ikpeazu were unknown to the law and made him ineligible to contest the poll.
He held that the 2011 tax clearance certificate and income tax receipt submitted to INEC before the 2014 PDP primaries contained false information.
The court said Ikpeazu’s appointment letter as General Manager of Abia Passenger Integrated Scheme on July 18, 2011 spelt out his salary and entitlements.
Abang said: “Going by the appointment letter, Ikpeazu would have worked for Abia Passenger Integrated Scheme for five months, 12 days.

“The earnings of the second defendant based on the letter of appointment by single calculation in 2011 for five months, 12 days is N493,000 or N546,669 if not assigned government vehicle.
“The tax payment submitted by the second defendant didn’t reflect this figure.”
Abang further held that the tax certificate indicated the gross earnings of Ikpeazu for 2011 to be N1.14 million and the income tax was assessed on this figure.
He also held that the date on the tax receipt filed by the governor was on a Saturday, adding that Saturday, even in Abia State, was a public holiday.
The court said Ikpeazu did not file his tax clearance in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and that all payments he made preceding the 2014 primaries were made in one day and not as and when due.
Abang held that Ikpeazu perjured when he said he had fulfilled all the requirements to contest the 2015 elections.
This, he said, was because he had failed to provide a tax clearance certificate that was known to the law.
He added that the governor was not qualified to be the candidate of the PDP in the primaries of 2014 and was also not qualified to be fielded as the candidate for the 2015 election.
He held that Ogah was the qualified candidate to contest as the candidate of the PDP for the 2015 election and his name ought to have been forwarded INEC as the PDP candidate.
He said Ikpeazu did not win the PDP primaries as he was not eligible or qualified to contest the poll.
He also awarded N100,000 cost in favour of the Ogah.

The ancient Bini empire had some strife with old Oyo, that
could be the reason. On the geographical spread of the old Bini empire see
the excerpt below:
By the middle of the sixteenth century, perhaps earlier,
the Oba of Benin ruled over an area which spread from the region of modern Lagos to the Igbo-speaking communities of the present Delta State.
Bradbury argues that it is clear that sentimental attachment to Benin and recognition of the
Oba’s temporal and spiritual authority did not necessarily depend on his
ability to subdue a vassal by force of arms.
Thus, for example, Lagos continued to pay tribute after it became a British Colony
in 1861, and in the reign of Eweka I (the first Oba of the second period)–1914-1933–chiefs in the Ondo Province
of Yorubaland appealed for the Oba’s ruling in disputes over land and succession.
Oba Oguola
About 1280AD-1295AD
The successor to Ewedo would have been prince Obuobu who was engaged in endless wars in Ibo land.
In his absence, his brother was crowned with the title Oba Oguola.

Oba Oguola dug the first and second moats to fortify the
city from invaders from Udo. He further decreed that important towns
and villages should build similar moats as defense systems around their communities.
This has given rise to twenty of such moats around Benin City and its environs.
He encouraged the systematic organization of the
ancient guild of brass casting which was declining.

The war menace from Akpanigiakon of Udo was ended when the Oba defeated his foe at the battle of Urhezen about the year 1285.

18. The following discusion took place on my Facebook friend’s page on May 2nd, 2016.
Since it is already in the public realm I have
taken the liberty of sharing it in my column as well.

Though we have not seen much of each other for a while,
I have known Alhaji Muktari Shinkafi for the better part of the last 35 years and we are more like
brothers than friends.

We spent a lot of time together in our youth and in those heady and blissful days of the early and mid-1980s when I was still at Cambridge University, and when I spent most of my leisure time playing polo at the
Lagos Polo Club or at the Guards Polo Club in the U.K., eating caviar
and drinking champagne. We had great fun in those
days and Nigeria was a much better and happier place
than it is now.

At that time Lagos was something of a melting pot and everybody
that was anybody in the country had a home there. These were the days before Abuja was built and Lagos was still our nation’s capital.

Most people were very comfortable then because the
naira was still strong at approximately two naira to one dollar.
It was often the case that people would travel to London, the South of France
or the Bahamas for long weekends with their loved ones and be back in Lagos for Monday
morning. Then, of course, there was the late night chicken suya in Obalende which was always a delight.
I wonder if that still exists.

More importantly, it really didn’t matter which part of
the country you came from or what your religious faith was because nobody cared in those days.

The only thing that mattered was whether you had a good education, a good pedigree and whether you had
class. Whether you were a Northerner, a Southerner,
a Christian or a Muslim didn’t matter at all. Lagos was home
to all and we loved it.

19. Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala
and other soccer fans in Anambra have expressed worries over
the yet-to-be concluded Football Association (FA) Cup in the state.
They described the situation as not too good for football development in the state in an interview with
newsmen but expressed the hope that it would not recur.

They hinged it on the crisis in the FA which pit the former Chairman,
Mike Umeh against the Deputy Chairman, Jude Obikwelu,
leading to two faction in the association. NAN reports that the
competition which is being managed by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA)-constituted Normalisation Committee kicked off on March 23.

However, the competition which was going on in two factions
was suspended on April 3 by the NFA and taken over by its Normalisation Committee which was set
up on April 10. The committee was set up normalise activities in the body, especially the leadership crisis which led to the two factions setting parallel up competitions.
Emmanuel Okala, a member of Nigeria’s Green Eagles that won the Africa Nations Cup in 1980 in Lagos, said the
development was unfortunate.

Okala attributed it to the busy schedule
of one the finalists, Gabros FC which is featuring in the Globacom Premier League.
He expressed the hope that it would not recur and tasked the committee to provide the needed fillip for Anambra football.
Odi Ikpeazu, the Proprietor of Ikpeazu Redoubtables FC
of Onitsha, described the competition in Anambra as a
sham, stressing that it was programmed to fail.

Ikpeazu, whose team was ousted in the final of the Mike Umeh-led faction by Gabros FC of
Nnewi, said he was uncomfortable with the manner the committee produced the state’s two representatives for the national finals.
While Gabros emerged winners of the Umeh faction, Cardinal Arinze FC of Onitsha defeated Smithcity FC
of Awka to win the Jude Obikwelu-led faction.

“For me, the entire process was a sham; the committee has not convinced me that they know what they are doing, Anambra people are seeing things for themselves. “The committee should
do more by providing visible evidence that they are on the right path to salvaging football in Anambra
because for now there is nothing to see,’’ he said. Arthur Ebunam, a
veteran footballer, said that the development was part of the manifestation of the administrative crisis in Anambra football.

Ebunam said it was sad that the state was no longer complying with the
competition’s national schedule because the management of football was in the hands of those
who were not passionate about its growth. “Something must be done, Anambra people are being deprived of good football administration, it’s crazy that things are going this way, every competition must have an end,’’ he said.

A sports consultant, Akonam Obiefuna, said that though regrettable, the delay in the FA final in Anambra did not call for much for concern, adding that it could be played anytime. Obiefuna described the situation as a peculiar one which required special treatment. He said that it was good that Anambra had representatives at the national level in spite of the challenges.

“What makes the final very important is that it is sponsored and there is an ultimate prize to fight
for. “Also, the good thing is that we are not left out in the national competition. “The final can come anytime,
it was a unique situation, it is for peace to reign and
it is a race against time, so, it is not much of a problem,’’ he said.

In his reaction, the committee’s Chairman, Iloegbune Okoye, told pressmen that the final would definitely be played whenever the coast was clear
as Gabros was busy in the elite division. He said
the two teams at the national level, Gabros and Cardinal Arinze FC, emerged fairly and in the best interest of football in the state.
He appealed for understanding as the committee was determined to deliver on its mandate.

20. Air Peace has celebrated its first year anniversary.
Chairman of the airline, Barrister Allen Onyema told a gathering of
well wishers and customers who gathered in Lagos how he almost jettisoned the idea of setting up Air Peace because of frustration in getting Air Operator
Certificate, AOC,. Onyema later fielded question from aviation reporters.

On what has been the experience this last one year, Onyema said ” First and foremost the honour and glory belongs to God almighty. We are very grateful for what God has done in the life of this young airline in the past 24 months. Actually we commenced commercial flight operations on the 24th of October 2014, therefore on the 24th of October 2015 Air Peace clocked one year.

It is has not been smooth but I thank God almighty that Air Peace has come to stay. A lot of people didn’t give us the chance of the benefit of doubt that we will be where we are today but I think, looking at all the figures and every yardstick Air Peace is the airline to beat now. Some of the few strides or mile stones recorded in the last one year in terms of passenger figures according to Onyema ” Air Peace is an airline of many first.

We started creating records right from day one.

On October 24th last year, on the day we commenced flight Air Peace had 14 revenue flights on that day.

It has never happened in this country before and I am
sure in the whole of Africa. No new airline on its inaugural day has done that, it is only Air Peace
of Nigeria that has been able to do that. So on our first day we started creating record, God almighty made it
possible for that to happen.

While other airlines will normally do Lagos-Abuja with family
and friends on their first flight, in the evening they will come
back to Lagos with family and friends. Air
Peace started with revenue flights not only Lagos
and Abuja but also in five other locations. On the first day we did Owerri,
Enugu, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Lagos, clocking about 14 flights in one day and airlifting over 300 revenue passengers on that day.

So it has never happened before, this is the first time any
airline will be doing that. Beside the fact that this is a first time an airline is starting with
a fleet of more than two aircraft, we started with seven from day one.
So we have been making waves right from day one, with God one our side it has been possible.
Again under one week we were able to have carried the number of passengers no airline has been able to do in their first seven days.

So considering our limited number of fleet-7, we have also been doing over 70 percent load factor in the last five months.
So these are strides that are not usual with a new airline.

At times a lot of people in this country think that Air Peace has been there for over a decade, it is just a new airline.
But we decided to make sure we get things right, we started from day one to
make a difference.

On the number of passengers airlifted so far,
he said “In the last eleven months we have airlifted over 500 thousand passengers in less than five months and that is very remarkable. It is not with twenty aircraft but just with five out of the seven, steadily scheduled to fly. Again, within this same period Air Peace was called upon to undertake the development of a new route, that is the Kebbi international airport.

it has never happened with a new airline before, this is the first time in les than three months into our operations, in fact less than two months into our operations, the Kebbi State government signed up Air Peace because from day one we showed strength, capacity and we showed a lot of zeal towards doing the right thing. So that will be the first time a new airline will be doing that.

He revealed that there is plan at further expansion on the domestic scene and looking at the West African sub region as a frontier market. He said “Like I said we
started with five locations at a time we added Asaba making it
six, when we discovered that Asaba was a dangerous field we pulled
out of Asaba. We were the first airline to do that because we have zero tolerance to unsafe operation.
Anything that is unsafe count Air Peace out.

I am from the South Eastern part of this country and I know how dear they hold Air Peace so taken off Asaba was not an easy decision but it was a decision born out of commitment to safety.
It was a decision taken over and above business considerations,
but for the safety of our passengers. And I am sure other airlines, we all knew that Asaba was unsafe, the Asaba runway was
unsafe. I knew the easterners wanted Air Peace so badly, I knew I would have been making maybe 80% or 90% passenger load
factor but I decided to take that decision.

All it took me to remove Asaba was one day I landed
with an executive jet there and I discovered that my plane was bumping, bumping and I called my director of flight operations, I said refund every money taken from everybody
in this area. We are going to stop operations into Asaba, so we
pulled out our Boeing from going to Asaba,
that was how we ended the Asaba flight operations.

And this decision was taken with every sense of patriotism,
every sense of commitment to safety and safe practices.
That was why we did it and I am sure it was when I gave a press
conference that Asaba was an accident waiting
to happen that the federal government decided to act.
So these are the thing in Air Peace we do, it is not about making money because there
is no money in aviation to start with. We are here to create jobs, that is my happiness,
that is my vision, that is my conviction that I should put
food on the tables of numerous unemployed Nigerians.

That is why I went into aviation in the first place. So we removed
Asaba, we put in Calabar, we also have increased our frequencies in some of
the other airports for example we do four flights from Lagos to Abuja daily,
four out of Abuja to Lagos daily. We do two flights into Owerri from Lagos daily and two from Oweri
into Lagos daily. We have even commenced two flights
from Owerri into Abuja daily and two back into Owerri.

We are doing about four or six flights out of Port Harcourt, so we have increased our
frequencies and for your information about
six months into our operations we added two more aircraft into our fleet
making it nine. Another two months down the line maybe about eight
months into our operations we acquired two more Boeing, making it

He also said the airline runs an open door policy “If you ask my baggage handler where we are today he or she will be able to tell you. Communication trickles down, it is not a one man thing, yes one man and his family could own the airline but the governance structure of Air Peace gives room for other people to contribute. You could see a young lady of less than 35 years is the managing director of Air Peace.

I just woke up one night, because I always recognize quality and made our safety manager in the person of Toyin Olajide, our Chief Operating Officer, that is the managing director. Because I have to remove myself from the day to day running, this is somebody who has had experience with Dana, Belview and others, even in her young age and the rest is history, you could see what she could do.

In Air Peace we do not know tribe, nor tongue, nor religion. I am an Igbo man, I own Air Peace 100% with my wife and children but in my appointments, you have a Yoruba as my managing director which I appointed way down the line, you have a Yoruba as my human resources manager, that is a very powerful department that can wreck or ruin you or make you. You have an Igbo as my director of engineering, you have a northerner in the accounts.

So Nigerians of all tribe and creed are here and they will tell you that nobody considered their religion or their ethnicity as at the time of employment. My doors are open, that is how we run this place. On safety and maintenance, Onyema said “And again in order to
ensure safety we decided to outsource our maintenance.
Everything about aviation or commercial flight operations is about maintenance.

You can buy a new plane today if you don’t follow the schedule
of maintenance that plane will fall out of the sky, it is all about maintenance.

So realizing that maintenance is very key and critical
to issues of safety, we decided to outsource our maintenance to United Kingdom based maintenance organization in the BCT, BCT aviation Maintenance Company of United kingdom I brought them here
at a huge cost, they are here in nigeria maintaining all our fleet
24/7. In fact they are so strict that the order day some items in the first aid box were short of
the required number, they grounded the aircraft from flying and
passengers were asked to come down.

They refused to sign off that plane just because of that.
But you know all over the world people could manage that
and say when we come back, but they refused.
And when they were having problems with some of our staff they quickly called me and I supported them.
I told them to ride on, I apologize to the passengers for the delay but what is
right must be done and should be done.

So in Air Peace we don’t cut corners, we strive to excel,
we strive to do the right things and when Nigerians fly us they
should just go and sleep nothing will happen. Air
Peace will never fall off the sky to the glory and honour
of God almighty. It will never happen because we have done that
which we are supposed to do. I am looking up to God and God has been with
us and I could see and feel the hand of God on this
airline because of so many things we have done are just not ordinary.

We have the best pilots in the land, all the chief pilots of other airlines in the country are
here flying for Air Peace. One thing staff want to look at is structure.
What is the structure put in place in any company? If you think the structure will not protect your future,
you don’t blame them for looking for greener pasture. They have seen the kind of structure we do here.
When you talk about safety in aviation, safety does not begin and
end with how you maintain the plan, with how new the planes is, the workforce
of your airline is very, very important.

How are they motivated? How is the workforce
of you airline motivated? If they are ill motivated that will become a source of worry to safety.
For example if you are owing a worker five months salary or four months salary,
that worker might be pushed into doing something.
He can weigh a 50kg load, you give to him and say please take this to Abuja for
me, he will collect five thousand from behind and put into his pocket and load that into
your aircraft.

He maybe loading a bomb, so you don’t say I have brown new planes, I maintain my
planes, maybe tomorrow I will start claiming that I pay BCT almost 100 million every month to maintain Air Peace
because of that I will relax. Staff welfare and motivation: “The most important thing is the human resources. The human resources of your airline how are they motivated? In Air Peace we do not owe salaries because we cut our coat according to the size of the materials we have.

So we make sure salaries in Air Peace are paid on the 25th of every month, if 25th falls on a Saturday we pay it on 24th being Friday.
